Gautama Buddha, also known as Siddhartha Gautama, was the individual who attained enlightenment under a peepal tree. He was born in the 5th century BCE in the region that is now known as Nepal. After his enlightenment, the Buddha dedicated the rest of his life to teaching and guiding others on the path to liberation. His teachings emphasized the importance of self-discipline, ethical conduct, mindfulness, and meditation as means to overcome suffering and attain enlightenment. The Buddha’s teachings, known as the Dharma, form the foundation of Buddhism, which has become one of the world’s major religions.
