Rukmini, also known as Rukmani, was a princess of Vidarbha and the daughter of King Bhishmaka. She was known for her beauty, intelligence, and virtue. It is said that when she heard about Krishna’s divine qualities and his charm, she fell in love with him and desired to marry him.
Krishna, who was aware of Rukmini’s love and admiration for him, reciprocated her feelings and accepted her proposal. However, Rukmini’s brother, Rukmi, had arranged for her to be married to another nobleman named Shishupala. Rukmini, being deeply devoted to Krishna, was determined to marry him despite the obstacles.
On the day of her wedding, Rukmini sent a message to Krishna, expressing her love and requesting him to come and rescue her. Krishna, along with his friend, Balarama, immediately set off to Vidarbha and reached Rukmini’s palace. In a daring and dramatic escape, Krishna kidnapped Rukmini and eloped with her.
Since then, Rukmini became Krishna’s beloved wife and they had a harmonious and loving relationship. Rukmini is considered to be an incarnation of the goddess Lakshmi, the wife of Lord Vishnu, of whom Krishna is an avatar. Hence, Rukmini’s devotion to Krishna is seen as representative of the deep love and devotion between Radha and Krishna, the divine couple.
It is important to note that while Rukmini is considered Krishna’s favorite wife, Krishna had multiple wives and companions. Satyabhama, for instance, was one of the prominent consorts of Krishna and she is often depicted as being jealous of Rukmini’s favored position. However, Rukmini’s unwavering devotion and love for Krishna established her as his favorite wife in the hearts of devotees.
